Gyrotonic®/Gyrokinesis®

Pilates at the Art of Fitness is second to none. The instructors are terrific. If I go in needing strength, I come out feeling stronger. If I go in needing peace, I come out with more clarity. If I go in with pain, I come out feeling stretched and lengthened. They have mastered the ability to customize each session and I am grateful.

About Pilates

The Pilates Method (also known as Contrology) was created in the early 20th century by Joseph H. Pilates. It is an exercise technique that incorporates spring-resistant equipment & body weight, to tone, strengthen and stretch the body. It requires the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit. Pilates is concerned with the process itself: experiencing all movement from the inside out by focusing on the present moment instead of placing the entire emphasis upon “doing.”

Pilates is a series of exercises that integrates strength, coordination, balance, posture, breath, and flexibility. The "Method" tones and strengthens the whole body while focusing on proper alignment, increasing range of motion and flexibility without putting undue stress on the joints. Pilates develops strong abdominal and postural muscles to support the skeletal system and act as the “powerhouse “ of the body. It was designed to empower people to be in control of their own health and well-being.

About Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis®

The Gyrotonic Expansion System®, created by Julian Horvath, is a unique system of exercise and movements that simultaneously stretches and strengthens the body with minimal effort, while increasing range of motion and developing coordination.

The “System” is taught on a variety of specially designed pieces of equipment built around the human body to create total freedom in movement. It emphasizes multiple joint articulation without compression, thus strengthening each ligament and its corresponding attachment. The motion patterns are natural, turbulence free and pure.

Gyrokinesis® is the methodology that forms the basis for the exercises on the Gyrotonic Expansion System® equipment. It is commonly described as yoga in motion. Gentle stretching, twisting, and bending movements are done in a rhythmic and fluid manner while standing, sitting on a low stool or on a mat.
